Born in 1982, Athier Mousawi is a British-Iraqi artist who completed his studies at the Central St. Martins School of Art and Design in London in 2007. His artistic exploration revolves around the experiences of the Iraqi diaspora, capturing the essence of exile, conflict, celebration, and nostalgic recollections of pre-revolution Iraq. Mousawi's works exhibit a consciously fragmented perspective, incorporating Islamic geometric shapes, Arabic calligraphy, and abstract figures in visually captivating and imaginative ways.
During his artistic journey, Mousawi initially focused on creating smaller-scale illustrations. However, in 2010, while undertaking a residency at Cité Internationale Des Arts in Paris, he ventured into the realm of large-scale paintings. This transformative period allowed him to incorporate color and scale, resulting in a series of bold and vibrant paintings that pay homage to modernist influences while maintaining a contemporary edge.
His artistic prowess has garnered recognition from esteemed institutions, including the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy, and the British Museum, all of which have had the privilege of collaborating with Mousawi on various projects, further solidifying his position as a highly regarded artist.
